Presence

All around us people are in the spirit of giving, so in this spirit... the greatest gift you can give to anyone is your presence.

There are a lot of moments when I could be more engaged, turn off my daydreaming, stop checking my phone (why?!) Taking way too much time surfing the Internet, watching shows/videos/etc, reading articles on this and that.  Sure all that stuff is good, but it clutters our mind with more chatter and stops us from engaging, making it harder to processes information in a mindful way.

Taking time to be in the moment is so important and we have to be so deliberate about it because it's so easy not to be present.

Be engaged!  Be in the moment! Notice the color, the smell, the feel, the sounds, the smell..... the world has so many gifts and once in a lifetime moments for us to experience.

Put down your phone, shut off your computer and take a look around.

Try it out, you might be surprised by the results.

Yoga Nidra Part 2

Right thumb, second finger, third finger....visualizing and feeling each part of the body as  my mind followed the instructors voice. Mind drifting in and out of consciousness coming back to her voice wandering along until the end of the practice when I wasn't sure where I was anymore.  My tensions released and body relaxed.

Yoga Nidra has many healing qualities and one hour is equal to 4 hours of sleep.  I went in exhausted and left feeling refreshed.

There are many audio options that guide the practice along or find an instructor in the community.  Get yourself comfy, put on your headphones and prepare to delve deep into the layers of your unconscious mind.

Yoga Nidra Part 1

Lately I've been tossing and turning, not really allowing myself to relax.  I've even been waking up in the middle of the night with my heart beating feeling anxious.  My mind has been darting around from this thought to that. I've been practicing power yoga and not fully allowing myself to meditate and relax. Yoga and meditation have always been so helpful with my mental and physical well being that I was glad when I serendipitously saw a yoga nidra workshop was being offered at one of the local yoga studios.   I quickly rearranged my schedule to attend, knowing that this was something that I needed to learn more about.   My experience with Yoga Nidra has been limited, but always beneficial. Usually a few minutes at the end of a class before savasana.  From what I can remember it was concentrating on each muscle tensing and releasing, allowing your mind and body to fully relax and moving into a very relaxed state.
I did a little reading up
In Need of Yoga Nidra

How it Works- Science of Yoga Nidra

The workshop is in a few hours, so stay tuned for the Part 2 of Yoga Nidra.

Commitment

Commitment..........a word that sends some kicking and screaming while others embrace it and hold it dear to their hearts.  I myself am in the process of moving from the former to the latter. It still evokes feelings of kicking and screaming as I fall into old habits and deny myself the pleasure of really committing.   I've fallen into the misconception that remaining uncommitted will allow me to be flexible and if I commit I may fail and disappoint.

Yoga has been teaching me to embrace commitment as a way of being present in each task and moving through it with the full intent of commitment.  I will move through and grow each day.   I may fall back into my old ways, but with each step on the mat, I am showing myself how embracing commitment is something to hold dear and not run away kicking and screaming.

Here is to my ever present intention to remain committed to the practice of yoga, no matter how loud I scream or want to run away.

What you bring to your mat will permeate all areas of your life, so today is the day to commit.

Changing Course

The students that practice Hatha Yoga at 6:30 am every Tuesday and Thursday at Lifetime will be taking a Changing Course while I am substituting.

Since, the teacher, poses and playlist were new to the students, Tuesdays theme was: Change.
I quoted Beryl Bender Birch's article below, " No matter what you do things change"
Next, I encouraged them to close their eyes and look inside to find the inner strength necessary to accept, learn from and be open to change.

D-Town Farm

Ruby and I at D-Town garden a few years ago, right after we both moved back to Michigan.

We were excited to be back in the United States and volunteering at home, in Metro Detroit.

We were inspired by the space, opportunity and community effort.

As we watered plants and planted flowers we discussed the possibility of living a happy, healthful and relaxed yogi life in Detroit, as we did in South Korea.

While working and brainstorming, "Yoganic" was mentioned and the possibility of living a happy, healthful and relaxed yogi life in Detroit became fathomable, for the 1st time.
